Final Large Boat Competition for 2024 Club Year. Report sent in by Marc Duncan.
The club held the final match of the 2024 Large Boat competitions on Sunday 3rd November from Poole aboard "Ocean Runner" skippered by Ryan Jones. With easterly winds the decision was to fish for dogs, congers and rays up towards North Head Buoy.
First drop saw Malcolm Gerrish land a smooth-hound, Roland Blomfield a dogfish and Glynn Barker a conger eel. We then up anchored and did a couple drifts by the buoy whilst waiting for the tide to turn. Once turned we anchored back at the same spot and caught 8 congers and a couple of pouting. With another move working our way back looking for more fish species, we anchored at a small rock where most people landed pouting. Jane Hopkins, Pete Chamberlain and Roland also managed a scad each.
After this we did a drift for plaice or gurnard but the drift was rather quick. Due to wind and tide together, we then decided to fish the harbour for bream or bass, where Marc Duncan caught a bass.
Results:
1st Marc Duncan 100 points, 2nd Malcolm Gerrish 77 points, 3rd Roland Blomfield 69 points, 4th Dave Wood 64 points, 5th Jane Hopkins 57 points, 6th John Wood 51 points.
Well done to all anglers who have fished the Large Boat Competitions this year and many thanks for your support. Congratulations to Malcolm Gerrish and Dave Wood who will represent the Club at next years Champ of Champs competition.
Overall results for 2024 are:
1st Malcolm Gerrish 220 points, 2nd Dave Wood 185 points, 3rd Marc Duncan 180 points, 4th Glynn Barker 175 points, 5th Roland Blomfield 160 points, 6th Jane Hopkins 155 points.
8th Large Boat Competition. Report and Photos sent in by Marc Duncan.
The 8th Large Boat competition took place on Sunday 22nd September from Poole aboard "Ocean Runner", skippered by Ryan Jones. With the weather forecast to be wet all day we pushed off looking for ballan wrasse. After an hour the rain had stopped and we were into fish, catching ballan wrasse, pouting, scad, black bream and red bream. We then moved towards the piers looking for plaice and gurnards where we had 8 tub gurnards and 5 plaice.
Next mark was for congers where we only had a couple, but Mark Boldick, Robin Lane and Jane Hopkins had some smooth-hounds. With another move in search of congers we eventually hooked into them with almost everyone landing at least one and most notable was Tony Methvan's of about 20lbs. Final mark saw us move to the Half Bank for doggies and rays. 5 dogs were caught and Glynn Barker had a small undulate ray. A good day's fishing with plenty of banter was had by all, having 11 species and 257 fish all of which were returned bar a couple of gurnards.
Results:
1st Robin Lane 234 points, 2nd Mark Boldick 196 points, 3rd Malcolm Gerrish 156 points, 4th Marc Duncan 146 points, 5th Jane Hopkins 144 points, 6th Glynn Barker 112 points.
Next Large Boat competition is on Sunday 6th October aboard Blue Strike Charters out from Lymington.
