22nd Mid-Week Recreational Fishing Trip Report sent in by Marc Duncan.
On Thursday 14th November the club managed to get out on a recreational mid-week fishing trip aboard "Ocean Runner" skippered by Ryan Jones out from Poole. 6 anglers set off primarily fishing for bass. With a few drifts on the way for live pouting we soon had enough live bait to drift the ledge for bass. After several drifts Paul Ibberson-grove caught what was to be the only bass there. With a move next up towards the Isle of Wight fishing the Bridge, we again tried to find the bass. Everyone had plenty of hits but the bass just didn't seem to be feeding. Mark Boldick did eventually catch one.
With the last of slack water and then the beginning of the flood, the decision was to move back to the Ledge in search of bass. Unfortunately, no more were caught. We then moved back towards Poole to try our hand at squid fishing. In the short period of time, we managed to get 10 good size squid on board.
Whilst the bass fishing wasn't great, a good time was had by all and the day made complete with a few squid being caught.
8th Recreational Week-End Fishing Trip. Report sent in by Dave Price.
Eight club members went out for a recreational week-end bass fishing trip on Saturday 19th October from Poole aboard "Ocean Runner" skippered by Ryan Jones. The day was sunny with patchy cloud light winds and small waves (initially) which made for ideal fishing conditions.
The skipper said that live-baits under floats was the only method currently for catching bass, so the plan was to stay on that all day. The first order of the day was to catch some live baits on feathers, which this time around was small to medium sized pouting. All 8 members did very well at this and it wasn't long before we have a live tank with lots of pouting swimming around.
We then set of for the bass but this time the skipper started the drift out in line with Mudeford Quay as he said this area was producing much better than the marks closer to the Needles where we would normally fish. We then spent most of the day drifting the live baits under the floats with reasonable success with a total of 10 decent sized bass being caught. Special mention should go to Neil Pullman who caught a bass of 7lb but the star angler, by a very long way was Robin Lane. Robin only caught one fish all day, but that fish was an amazing 13lbs bass which was handled very carefully, weighed and returned to the water as soon as possible. It was great to see that huge bass recovering and swimming away.
Towards the end of the day as the tide turned the wind got up and we experienced some very large swells, but as" Ocean Runner" is a very big catamaran it was able to handle the adverse conditions and we were able to fish through this. On the way back we stopped to do a few drifts for squid between the piers, which according to Ryan has been outstanding for the previous couple of weeks. Unfortunately, there was some high winds over the two days before our trip and this clouded up the water, which did not make ideal conditions for the squid which are predominantly sight feeders. Having said that, we did end up with 5 squid being caught though which was a good return considering the colour of the water.
The winter bass fishing is proving to be really great this year and there are still two more recreational bass fishing trips out with Ryan on "Ocean Runner" which currently have spaces available. Please contact Robin Lane if you're interested.
19th Recreational Evening Fishing Trip. Report sent in by Dave Price.
7 members from the club went out for an evening recreational fishing trip on Tuesday 24th September out from Lymington aboard "Double Six" skippered by Ben Wood. The weather was good with light winds and only a slight chill once the sun had gone down.
This was a short trip from 5pm until 9pm to fish the Solent with the target fish being codling. We were fishing within a short time of leaving Lymington and Ben anchored up on a deeper mark with the hope that the tide run would not be too strong as we arrived shortly after the tide had turned. We were lucky as the Solent can be very weedy but, on the night, there was hardly any weed around.
No codling was landed although Mark Boldick hooked into a very good fish that rather frustratingly came off as it went under the boat. We did land a selection of congers, dogfish and some good-sized bream. The biggest was caught by Robert Taylor at 2lb 6oz.
