11th Mid-week Recreational Fishing Trip. Report and photos sent in by Marc Duncan.
On Wednesday 24th September 7 club members ventured out on a recreational fishing trip aboard "Ocean Runner" skippered by Ryan Jones out of Poole, fishing for bass. First, was to catch live bait for the bass. We anchored up for pouting, small bream, scad and mackerel and soon had enough to go to Christchurch Ledge. First drift saw Mark Boldick land one and the next couple of drifts we missed a few. As with previous trips it was proving rather difficult. With a move to the bridge, we had slightly better luck with a few being caught for Marc Duncan, Tony Knight and Robin Lane., but further drifts did not produce any more. We then moved back to the Ledge and a few drifts saw the bass coming on the feed with Neil Pullman, Rob Taylor, George Dark and Mark all catching.
Finally, we had the last half hour fishing for squid. Mark lost a cuttlefish and Marc managed to get one over the gunnel. A good day's fishing was had by all with everyone catching a bass.
4th Week-End Recreational Fishing Trip. Report and photo sent in by Dave Price.
On Saturday24th August 8 club members went aboard "Ocean Runner" skippered by Ryan Jones for a day's fishing out from Poole the weather was sunny but with slightly stronger winds than predicted, although still very fishable in a large cat like "Ocean Runner".
The bass trip took the usual format of stopping off first for live-baits on one of the reefs out from Bournemouth Pier. This time the skipper took us to a different reef than normal, as our usual destination had apparently been hammered by other commercial boats over the previous couple of days. This new reef was a very different proposition to our usual one and held much smaller (like really tiny) pouting that were far more difficult to catch. For most of us, even when we scaled the hook sizes right down, it still provided a challenge to land that many fish. Luckily, we had Mike Fox on the boat with us, and he showed us all how it is done and seemed to catch multiple fish with just about every cast and probably did a much better job of populating the live tank than the rest of us put together.
With our tiny baits in the tank, we undertook a very lumpy run out the bridge to start fishing the live baits under the floats. Again, as with the July bass trip, it was difficult to get on the fish. We spent most of the day on the floats drifting in and around that area and only landed 4 sizeable bass between us all day, the best being caught by Neil Pullman at 5lb 10oz. There were a few undersize bass landed & released plus a couple of fish dropped on the way to the boat, but again nothing like the levels or size of fish that had been seen before in June. The skipper Ryan did tell us that catching bass in August can be challenging and that once the weather cools and the spratts come in, then the bass fishing should pick up.
As usual, we did stop off on the way back into Poole and did a bit of fishing at anchor. Here members caught mackerel, dogfish, black bream and congers. Despite not landing that many fish it wa still an enjoyable and great day out. There is a recreational bass trip booked on "Ocean Runner" every month for the reainder of the year, so as long as the weather holds we can hopefully expect to get some better results as we go into autumn and early winter.
